For Dr. Jim Hintz, joining Michigan State University as the new vice president for Student Affairs represents both an honor and a calling. With decades of experience in higher education, Hintz is deeply committed to advancing student success, belonging and engagement across campus.
“What excites me most about being here at Michigan State University is the attitude toward supporting students and their success,” says Hintz. “There are many world-class universities out there, but what sets MSU apart is our deep commitment to caring about student success — helping students find their passions, reach their dreams and feel like they belong here as Spartans.”
In his new role, Hintz will oversee departments and initiatives that support all aspects of student life, ranging from leadership and engagement to wellness and inclusion, ensuring that every student has access to the resources they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Educational Background and Career Path
Hintz’ path to student affairs leadership was shaped by his passion for higher education and helping students achieve their full potential. As a first-generation college student, he experienced firsthand the importance of support systems, mentorship and accessible resources — perspectives that continue to guide his commitment to student success today.
He began his academic journey at Ohio University, earning an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that combined political science, business, and sociology. He later earned a master’s degree in college student personnel, more commonly known today as higher education administration, before pursuing his Ph.D. in higher education administration from Indiana State University while working at Purdue University.
“I’m a lifelong learner,” says Hintz. “There are always opportunities to learn more, but I’m proud of having completed my Ph.D. and to continue to grow in ways that help me serve students better.”
Throughout his career, Hintz has held leadership roles focused on student engagement, academic success and campus well-being. His professional philosophy centers on creating environments where students feel supported, valued and inspired to contribute to their communities.
A Passion for Campus Life
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Hintz has a deep appreciation for the vibrant culture of university life. He is an enthusiastic fan of college athletics and looks forward to experiencing the Spartan spirit firsthand.
“When I worked at UConn, I gained a real appreciation for women’s basketball — the entertainment value, the teamwork, the intensity,” says Hintz. “Coming to another university with a strong athletics culture is something I really enjoy.”
In his personal time, Hintz enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. His son currently studies in Chicago, giving him the opportunity to explore the city and reconnect through visits. He fondly recalls family cruises taken while his son was growing up, which allowed them to experience new places and cultures together.
“Even outside of work, my life really revolves around campus culture — music, theater and all the things that make a college community special,” says Hintz.
Looking Ahead
As vice president for Student Affairs, Hintz aims to strengthen MSU’s culture of care and collaboration by prioritizing belonging, engagement and holistic support. His goal is to ensure that every Spartan, no matter their background or path, feels connected to the university community.
“I want students to feel that this is a place that cares about them,” says Hintz. “Because when they feel connected, they’re not just more successful in class — they’re able to truly thrive as Spartans.”
With his leadership, Michigan State University continues to advance its mission of empowering students to succeed academically, grow personally and make a meaningful impact in the world.
