James Hintz, Ph.D. | Vice President for Student Affairs

Dr. James R. Hintz is the Vice President for Student Affairs at Michigan State University. In this role, he leads strategies to promote student success, engagement, belonging, and well-being to help students achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals. He also shares oversight of University Health and Wellbeing with the Provost. 

Before joining Michigan State, Dr. Hintz held leadership positions at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, the University of Connecticut, and Ohio University. He is an active member of NASPA, the national association for student affairs professionals. A native of Norwalk, Ohio, Dr. Hintz earned a doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana State University, a master’s degree in college student personnel, and a bachelor’s degree in social and managerial science from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
