Helping Spartans Find Where They Belong

By Kara Mackenzie

Whether a student is new or returning, living on campus or commuting, undergraduate or graduate, the first six weeks of the semester are crucial in shaping a positive college experience. To better address this need, MSU is rolling out Welcome to State, an expanded, collaborative approach to fall welcome that emphasizes community, belonging and student success.

"Belonging is foundational to student success," said Leah Ball, assistant director of communications and digital engagement in the Office of the Provost. "Welcome to State is designed to help students begin building those connections early and understand that there is a place for them at Michigan State."

Welcome to State is more than an events calendar. It's a cross-campus collaboration that makes it easier for students to find resources, opportunities and a sense of belonging at MSU. By pooling funds and working together, units are better able to reach students early in the semester, highlighting supportive resources and extracurricular activities that can help them persist and feel welcome on campus.

As part of MSU's goal of increasing the six-year graduation rate to 86% while reducing opportunity gaps, Welcome to State provides an important way to meet students where they are and connect them with information, resources and opportunities early in the semester.

"When students feel connected to their community, they are more likely to engage in campus life, seek support when they need it, build meaningful relationships and take advantage of opportunities that enhance their academic experience," said Ball.

Ball said every employee on campus has a role in making that possible.

"Sometimes that means helping a student find the right resource, attending a welcome event to better understand the experience and engage with students, sharing information about opportunities, or simply taking the time to make a student feel seen and valued," she said. "Small interactions can have a lasting impact."
