Condolences and support for those impacted by the Oxford High School Shooting

Dear Spartans,

Our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts are with the families, friends and community who suffered a tremendous loss yesterday in the shooting at Oxford High School. We know some of our Spartans are graduates of Oxford and are part of the community. Please know, we are here to support you and all impacted by this tragic event.

Tragic and stressful events can often times cause a multitude of changing emotions and thoughts. If you, or any of your friends, experience prolonged and/or intense emotional distress that begins to interfere with your ability to function in your daily life, you might consider seeking support from a mental health professional. Michigan State University’s Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) offers numerous resources. You can find more information on the CAPS website through the "Get Started" link.

For anyone who may be in crisis, CAPS provides remote crisis services 24/7/365. If you are in crisis and need to talk with someone, or are worried about a friend, call the CAPS Crisis Line at 517-355-8270 and press “1” when prompted to speak with a crisis counselor. You will be connected to a counselor available to assist you at no charge.

  • If you encounter wait times with this resource that are unmanageable for you, please connect with an alternative crisis resource, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK) or visit their website, or the Crisis Text Line (Text HOME to 741-741 or visit the website). If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

MSU has also invested in a partnership with a service called ThrivingCampus, which is devoted to assisting MSU students in connecting with mental health professionals in their area. The ThrivingCampus website allows you to search for providers by practice area, accepted insurances, treatment approaches, race and many other potentially meaningful criteria.

Please know we are here for you. We encourage you to reach out should you need someone to speak with. We also ask you check in with friends as we all work together to keep our Spartan community safe.

Sincerely,

Vennie Gore
