MSU Winter Fest 2021

March 11, 2021

Michigan State University’s two break days, March 2 and 3, not only gave students a break from their computers and class, but also gave them a chance to connect with other Spartans. To provide some fun during the break days, MSU created its first Winter Fest. The event included a multitude of activities, such as a photo scavenger hunt, ice sculptures, a life-size maze and explorations of the on-campus gardens. For those not on campus, MSU provided virtual activities.

Winter Fest gave students a chance to finally interact with each other in person and make some new friends, while also getting down time from classes. More than 600 students participated in Winter Fest, both in-person and virtually. All students were held accountable to the MSU Community Compact and the event was executed safely.

Ph.D. student Cristina Marie Rivera Quiles, studying neuroscience and working to determine how different neuropeptides play a role in addiction, said she hadn’t been able to walk around MSU since moving to campus in the fall. “Winter Fest was a fun and safe way to explore the campus,” she said.

Many students, like Rivera Quiles, experienced campus for the first time during the break days. Julia Nasiatka, an undergraduate student studying human capital and society, as well as leadership of organizations at MSU, finally had a reason to get out of her house and walk around campus. Nasiatka was able to make some new friends and capture some great pictures to keep as memories.

Winter Fest symbolizes the progress the MSU community has made in regard to COVID-19, and the direction it is going. The event also allowed MSU an opportunity to test many processes and procedures being prepared over the past year to safely host on-campus events.
