Get Out, Enjoy the Weather and Your Favorite Local Spots

April 7, 2021

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, warmer days are upon us. For many, the benefits of this seasonal change are immense, especially during COVID-19. Although we still need to be vigilant and keep each other and ourselves safe while vaccinations are distributed, we can get outside and even see others.

When the weather got cold, we lost yet another sense of freedom since many of us couldn’t even make it to the end of our driveways without wanting to run back inside. This meant even more time spent inside, further away from the rest of the world. However, now our world is starting to look greener, the daylight lasts longer and we can finally enjoy some fresh air without the pinch of the cold. Warmer weather gives us so much more opportunity to connect with one another safely. This is the time to pick yourself up off of the couch, get outside and enjoy all of the benefits that come from doing so.

Three reasons to enjoy this season:

  1. Stronger bones: An article from spoonuniversity.com states that sunlight gives your body Vitamin D. Vitamin D is extremely important for your bone health, and since we’re often deprived of it throughout the winter, it’s important to get it while you can.
  2. Broader minds: Science Daily tells us that getting outside – especially when the weather is nice – can actually be a way to broaden our mindsets. When we go outside, we remember how full life is of things other than work and social media. This allows us to think deeper and feel more connected to our environments.
  3. Support for Local Businesses: In the winter, I tend to much prefer staying home and brewing my own coffee than braving the winds for a carefully crafted latte. However, now, I look for any excuse to get outside. Whether you’re in East Lansing or not, the small businesses near you need your support. Get out and support them! You’ll be doing something good for your community, mind and body.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite small businesses in or near East Lansing:

  • Blue Owl Coffee, 213 Ann Street, Suite C, East Lansing
  • The Edge Tea/Shake Bar, 213 Ann St., Suite C, East Lansing
  • Curious Book Shop, 307 E. Grand River Road, East Lansing
  • Strange Matter Coffee, 2010 E. Michigan Ave., #103, Lansing
  • Metro Retro Thrift Store, 304 E. Grand River Road, Lansing

You see, Spartans, we are lucky to have this beautiful weather; don’t let it go to waste. Use your breaks between classes to get out and enjoy our beautiful campus if you’re in the East Lansing area. It misses you just as much as you miss it. If you’re not on campus, take advantage of this weather in any way you can, wherever you may be. While I encourage you to get out, don’t forget to be safe while doing so, and follow all safety guidelines.
