Gender and Sexuality Campus Center Provides Educational Programs to Sustain an Inclusive Environment at MSU

April 28, 2022
The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center (GSCC) is a student-centered resource created to build and sustain a more inclusive and equitable environment for LGBTQIA2S+ communities at MSU.

Founded in 2006, GSCC was originally named the LBGT Resource Center. However, July 1, 2021, the LBGT Resource Center changed its name to be more inclusive of the diversity of sexual and gender identities, including asexual and agender communities. Through advocacy, education, programming and community building, GSCC’s team of assistants, coordinators, directors and student interns has been able to create a community that treats people with equity and equality.

One of GSCC’s many educational resources are its open workshops. These workshops are available to all MSU community members. Dates are set in advance and registration is required. However, due to the high demand of the open workshops, they tend to be filled to capacity and close well before the workshop date. One recent GSCC workshop focused on pronouns. Despite the everyday use of pronouns, their impact on understanding gender identity is often misunderstood.

GSCC also offers programming to the MSU community that provides safe spaces for conversations as well as resources that can otherwise often be difficult to find. For example, GSCC hosts LGBTea, a meeting held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3 p.m., during which the MSU community comes together for coffee, tea and conversation.

Other programs offered include the Monthly HIV Testing Clinic, Pride Prom and the Lavender Reception, which recognizes graduating queer and trans Spartans while also providing a space to come together to celebrate another year of progress and struggle.

Through these educational workshops and programs, GSCC strives to create a community where all genders and sexualities are welcomed. No matter who you are, undergraduate or graduate, faculty or staff, GSCC is here to help you find your community.
