Spartans Can Find Hundreds of Opportunities Through Career Services and Handshake

January 27, 2022

Spartans searching for an internship or part-time job this semester can find many available on campus and in the greater Lansing area. Through Michigan State University (MSU) alone, there are more than 100 internships or part-time jobs for students. On the other hand, there are plenty of local, off-campus, job opportunities also available.  All of which can be found on Handshake at the CareerNetwork.msu.edu website.

According to Handshake’s website, the company was created to ensure college students have access to desirable job opportunities. Since its foundation in 2014, Handshake has been partnering with colleges across the country. Since that time, the network of colleges has grown, and Handshake has become the leading early career search tool for college students and recent grads across the United States, according to the website information.

Handshake allows students to interact directly with employers for an easier and more direct way of communication. Students are able to use Handshake to view job postings, manage on-campus interviews, schedule advising appointments and learn about upcoming workshops and events.

MSU adopted Handshake in 2016, bringing students and employers together to provide opportunities for students to jump start their careers. According to Executive Director of MSU Career Services Jeff Beavers, MSU continues to use Handshake.

“MSU was one of only about 10 clients,” Beavers said when MSU first began using Handshake. “Today, Handshake is used by 1,400 institutions and is valued at $3.5 billion.”

Due to the rapid success of Handshake, MSU continues to post internships and part-time jobs on the career building program.

It’s important for all college students to grow their resume in order to access potential career opportunities. From part-time jobs to internships, MSU and Handshake provide students a path to find positions to help provide valuable experience to students.

Many MSU part-time job postings are looking for 10 or more student hires. To apply for these jobs, log in to your Handshake account directly at msu.joinhandshake.com. Once logged into Handshake, students will need to fill out their profile and upload a resume.  As soon as the profile and resume are updated, Spartans will be able to apply to openings by following the instructions from the employer.
