July 15, 2020

Renee Brown, director of the Center for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), was named one of three 2019-2020 Community Engagement Professional Servant Leadership Award recipients from Campus Compact for Michigan.

Brown’s passion and leadership led her team to nominate her for the award that honors the contributions of Community Engagement Professionals at Campus Compact for Michigan partner institutions.

“In this time of challenge and uncertainty, it was a bright spot to be able to nominate Renee for this award, said Michelle Snitgen, CCEL assistant director for academic programs. “Renee has been an unwavering leader and champion for community engaged learning, not only at MSU, but to the field as a whole. The depth and breadth of her accomplishments are astounding, and even more impressive are her relationships with stakeholders and colleagues across campus and community.”

Brown was honored by the nomination of her team and recognition of her peers. “It was meaningful that my team nominated me. We are a strong unit and motivated by our work,” Brown said. “It’s also an honor to be recognized by those working in the field.”

Snitgen and the CCEL team reached out to others for letters of support, which were sent by DeniseMaybank, Ph.D., vice president and associate provost for Student Affairs and Services; Allyn Shaw, Ph.D., assistant VP for SAS; Terrence Frazier, assistant VP for SAS; Laurie Van Egeren, Ph.D., interim associate provost for University Outreach and Engagement; Sue Webster, MSU community liaison; Ken Szymusiak, co-director of the Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation; among several others, including students.
