Update on transgender bathroom use
May 18, 2016
The U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education have issued new guidance addressing the Title IX obligations of universities, colleges, and school districts regarding transgender students, including the use of bathrooms. That guidance directs universities, colleges and school districts to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.
Consistent with federal guidance, students and employees at Michigan State University may use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity. We also have taken several additional steps to meet the needs of our diverse community members, including designating all-gender restrooms in several locations across campus, expanding the availability of flexible housing options and integrating the use of student preferred names in university systems.
These efforts are part of MSU’s overall efforts to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that welcomes all members of our community.
