‘Go Green Wear Pink’ This Week
The Detroit Red Wings may have lost to the Carolina Hurricanes during their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game on October 16, but the Michigan State fans in attendance left with heads held high after raising money for a great cause.
Thanks to the Spartans for the Cure group on campus, MSU students and all other Spartans were able to purchase tickets to the Red Wings game online at a discounted rate, with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen foundation, which funds breast cancer research and support for patients across mid-Michigan and nationally.
This week through October 30, Spartans for the Cure will be sponsoring its biggest campaign, the “Go Green Wear Pink” t-shirt fundraiser in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students in the club will be stationed on campus throughout the week selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts. With local businesses underwriting the production cost of the shirts, Spartans for the Cure is able to give nearly all of the money they raise back to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Spartans for the Cure is a registered student organization at MSU that has teamed up with Susan G. Komen to raise awareness and money on campus. This year was the first year that the organization worked with the Detroit Red Wings, but the Spartans for the Cure certainly is not new to this cause. The group has had massive success in the past and was the number one fundraising group for Susan G. Komen in the United States in 2012.
According to Becca Bubenheimer, an MSU senior and the vice president of Spartans for the Cure, being in this group has been a great opportunity to be involved and raise money for a disease that continues to affect the lives of so many people.
“Our events are fun and you get to make a difference while you’re having fun,” Bubenheimer said. “We work with a really great group of people.”
For students who were not able to attend the game last week, Spartans for the Cure has several activities planned for the academic year that will give them an opportunity to contribute.
Although Breast Cancer Awareness month is over at the end of October, Spartans for the Cure will continue hosting events through the spring. The group holds a Bowl for the Cure event in March and participates in Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure event every April.
